![]() ![]() The big OEMs of the time like Wilson, MacGregor and others made forged clubs. Meanwhile, Lynx continued making noise as investment casting was starting to take over the golf business. He went on to found Pinseeker Golf and later the John Riley Company and would create a metal-faced wooden driver and later patented the very first fully metal driver. While details are sketchy, Riley either left or was forced out of the partnership within a year. It also brought custom spec builds to the masses and it revolutionized off-course distribution.Īll was not well with the Riley-Ross partnership, however. ![]() It was the first investment-cast iron that sold in mass quantities, Hoeflich told us. In a MyGolfSpy article from 2011, former Tommy Armour, TaylorMade and Nickent executive John Hoeflich cited the Master Model as one of the most important golf innovations of the modern era. Remember that first truly successful investment-cast iron we mentioned? That would be the first iron Lynx produced, the 1972 Master Model. That’s an awful lot of English Rileys connected to the Lynx name. While we don’t know for sure of a familial connection, we do know history hates coincidences. We can find no direct, uhh, links between John Riley, the Riley Car Company, the Lynx Car Company and Bob Riley on the worldwide web. Those two Ford employees were John Mills and … wait for it … Bob Riley. By 1969, British Leyland stopped making Rileys.Īlso in the late 1960s, two Ford employees started their own open-wheeled race car company called the Lynx Car Company. By the late ‘40s, Riley merged with British sports car maker MG and that group eventually became part of the British Leyland Motor Corporation. Riley made everything from little sports cars to Rolls Royce wannabees. The Riley Car Companyįrom 1926 to 1938, the Coventry, England-based Riley Car Company made and sold a slick little British roadster called the Riley Lynx. While it might be easy to say the name “Lynx” is a play on words with “links,” the real story might be a tad more interesting. with partner Carl Ross, a former sales manager for the Arnold Palmer Golf Company. In 1961, Riley emigrated to the United States to take an engineering job as a tooling specialist with PING.īy the end of the decade, Riley had designs on striking out on his own. John Riley was one of the U.K.’s top amateur golfers in the 1950s, playing out of the Accrington Club in northern England. The internet is a little hazy when it comes to the birth of Lynx but the story actually starts where the brand currently sits, in England. Just how did Lynx start and how did it get its name? But would it surprise you to know that the first truly successful investment-cast club was designed and sold by Lynx?īut before we go there, let’s start at the beginning. Today it’s pretty much accepted in golf canon that Karsten Solheim is the man who made investment-cast irons a thing. History, it’s said, is written by the victors. History’s Mysteries: The First Life of Lynx Golf So let’s jump in the time machine, buckle up and take a trip back in time. The company’s journey from disruptive early ‘70s innovator to corporate cog to mothballed store brand to European niche is a fascinating one. By our count, the current iteration of Lynx is its eighth. The lynx, of course, is a feline and we all know cats have their allotted nine lives. Today’s look back should be an adventure. It’s our effort to look back at some of golf’s bygone brands and find out what happened to them and why. Welcome to another edition of History’s Mysteries. ![]()

Which could you use? Well, there are several video file formats in use today, but the most popular ones include: 1. Having known the issues and challenges of HTML5 video encoding, it is important to make the right selection of video file format to make it cross-browser and cross-platform compliant. Let’s get started! The most popular web video file formats In this post, we’ll cover HTML5 video encoding in detail, the role of HTML5-compatible video players, why you should use them, and how to do it all at scale. And to do that, it's important to consider the target audience, the browsers and devices they are likely to use, and the balance between video quality and file size. One must still choose the format to deliver an optimal video streaming experience. HTML5 includes a native element that allows developers to embed and play videos directly within web pages, eliminating the need for proprietary multimedia plugins, and significantly improving the user and developer experience for video streaming.īut the element alone isn’t a silver bullet. This is why the introduction of HTML5 in 2008 was such a big deal. This approach worked but had drawbacks – compatibility issues, many security vulnerabilities, and reliance on bloated external software. ![]() When it comes to online video content, browsers have historically relied on third-party plugins (remember Adobe Flash or Microsoft Silverlight?) to stream videos. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Much of his childhood was spent in Milwaukee's poor North Side and the industrial town of Rockford, Illinois - consistently ranked as one of America's most blighted cities - before he returned to Chicago as a teenager. Iceberg Slim, or Robert Beck as he would become, was born Robert Lee Maupin, in Chicago on 4 August 1918. So I hunted down the rest of his fiction. After reading Trick Baby, I was sure Iceberg Slim was a writer with a mission, rather than just an entertaining street raconteur. Any real writer should be able to speak truth to power, and do it entertainingly. I found a tatty old copy of Trick Baby in another shop it had long been out of print in the UK. Later I learned that Slim had produced novels, too. How could you not pick up a book called Pimp written by a guy named Iceberg Slim? The narrative had wit, verve, rage and humour. I picked up his autobiography, Pimp: The Story of My Life, in a secondhand bookshop in Soho. But wherever I travelled, a more surprising writer - a Chicagoan called Iceberg Slim - remained one of my biggest influences. And then I looked further afield, to Beckett and Tolstoy and so on. Then I looked further back, to James Hogg, Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Scott, Lewis Grassic Gibbon and Robert Burns. Kelman's insistence on an authentic voice was particularly liberating. James Kelman and Alasdair Gray, in their different ways, took McIlvanney's approach to a new level. He wrote about people I could identify with, and they were the central characters, the stars of the show, not token villains or comedians. William McIlvanney, the author of Laidlaw and other books set in Glasgow, was a revelation. To get past this means that invisible barriers have to be broken down: I found the inspiration to do that under my nose, in Scotland. This, of course, was nonsense, and I can see now that I was looking for reasons to fail, as one does when failure is the cultural expectation. So Waugh was inspirational, but he was also prohibitive - he confirmed that you had to be posh and wealthy to be a writer. The Ernest Hemingway and Jack London cult of the macho writer pretty much passed me by: I thought them all very well for the wild frontier lands of America, but writers in Britain were supposed to be like Evelyn Waugh. Waugh - who conjured worlds so different from my background - became, and remains, one of my favourite writers. My own writer's journey probably started with Evelyn Waugh, via my Uncle Jack, a fireman, who was taking an Open University degree course. ![]() Often not brilliant books, but none the less they circulated. In small, systems-built flats there is scant room for bookcases, so in the housing scheme where I grew up, books were passed around. Like many people from a "non-bookish culture" I was probably always a writer, but I didn't know how to become one. ![]() ![]() The BitTorrent client will use the downloaded torrent file to locate parts of the file you are looking for on other computers in the network and begin downloading them. The torrent file holds metadata about the files and folders to be distributed, and a list of network locations of trackers for the file you are looking for. Scene transitions can be chaotic at times, but overall it feels very complete and it’s easy to focus in on the action on screen. The camera work is unbelievably good for it being filmed in such a small venue, too. Everything is lit well enough that the action is clear, but it remains natural enough that it feels like a typical live show as you watch it. On top of that, it does it in amazing quality. The presentation captures everything awesome about them in a nutshell. In the end this PV is just flat out badass. It’s such an amazing spectacle and this PV presents it gorgeously. It really is one of the most intimate performances you’ll ever see an idol group do. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, you see the girls picked up by them and down in the pit with them. The calls and wotagei for Guso Drop are downright dangerous. Their fans are the craziest I’ve ever seen. The members manage to be chaotic but choreographed in a way I’ve never really seen an idol group do. The authenticity of this PV really is amazing. Then again, it’d be too amazing a show to care. As much as I’d love to see them, I wonder if I’d walk out in one piece. I’ve seen some of their live clips online and this PV is pretty accurate if not slightly more organized for production’s sake. ![]() This PV really captures the wildness that can happen at their live shows. Everyone is in on the fact that this is going to be a PV because the camera work and action are way too good for it to be a spliced together, lazy live compilation. This PV focuses on what has made the group great and is a fantastic way for the original act to wrap it up. ![]() Guso Drop will soon be losing their “leader” Saki and gaining three new faces, so this will be the last single with the original guard. Guso Drop has been a key player in my expansion into alternative idol groups. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Which again, is something I have hopes of doing eventually! If I could do it over, I’d move it into a cabinet off to the side or corner of the room, and I’d fill that space with a beautiful custom hood. Number Three | Microwave Incorporated into Upper Cabinetsīeing that I’m going for a vintage farmhouse feel, I’m wishing I wouldn’t have mounted the microwave above the stove. Luckily – walls are easy to paint (easier than cabinets), so that’s something that might happen in the not so distant future! This might not be a big deal if you’re just doing it for your own house, but as someone who loves being able to share quality pictures with you all… it has been frustrating! The problem is that it’s hard to reconcile the white balance without tinting the cabinets yellow or the walls blue! Now technically, this is OK design wise – it doesn’t break any rules.īut what I’ve found is that it’s really tricky to photograph this room well because of the two different tones! Remember what I said earlier about not sharing much about this room? Number Two | Cream Cabinets on White Walls So my two tips about this: Go with the full backsplash, and double check contractor recommendations, especially if they feel a little “off”. It’s about as fun as you would imagine to clean splashed spaghetti sauce off a white painted wall. In a kitchen, it should be about 18″ or the full distance between counter and cabinet!Īlong with looking more finished and professional, I’m also often disappointed with the missing wall protection. ![]() I’ve realized now after the fact that the 6″ backsplash like these is really intended more for bathroom counters. So our tile contractor at the time told me that this small 6″ section of granite that runs around the entire counter accounted for the “backsplash”, and I took his word for it. I can make a short list about things I’m really glad we didn’t end up doing – and that would be on top of the list! Here are my top five “would have done it differently” farmhouse kitchen remodel items: I almost did a gold glaze over all the cabinets. My inspiration kitchen had a sort of Tuscany feel, and I ended up matching the granite and cabinets almost exactly. This was pre-pinterest, so my “old school pinterest” was a three-ring binder with cut out pictures from Better Homes and Gardens glued in with my notes. What was trendy in the early 2000’s is different than what I love now! The things you learn, especially after living in a space for a while can really make a difference to decisions you might want to make during a remodel!Īs a general thought, looking back I realize I got a little caught up in the idea of my “dream kitchen”. It’s been said that a good kitchen layout should have your big main appliances in a triangle – and my stove, sink and fridge do make a triangle through the main part of the room! Noticing Things I’d do differently: I also love the final layout of the kitchen. The lighting (we added can lights when we raised the ceiling – which I have enjoyed, BUT I might someday add in a chandelier over the bar and add under cabinet lighting… we’ll see!).Things I still love about our farmhouse remodel: Taking out the wall between the kitchen and the fireside room.Īs we’ve been living in the completed remodeled kitchen for a few years now, I’ve found both things I really like about what we did, and a few things that I’d change if I could go back in time. The big changes we made in the kitchen were: Here’s how it looked during the demolition process. So just like that, we gutted the kitchen and started literally from the ground (3 ft under ground, to be exact) up! But as we got moved in and started living there, we realized it needed to be done sooner rather than later! When we originally bought the house we had planned on living with the kitchen as is for a while and starting the renovations later on. When you think about it, in the kitchen there are the cabinets, appliances and countertops which are all 3 lasting (and expensive) purchases! The kitchen remodel was the biggest change, and the biggest expense – which I feel is pretty typical of most whole home remodels. We bought it 10 years ago and have been renovating and remodeling ever since! Our farmhouse was built originally in 1906. If you upgrade to Proxmox VE 8.0, and had Glances working on a prior version you will need to re-install. However, thanks to tteck, he provided a solution which I’ve incorporated into this guide. Update June 23, 2023: Proxmox VE 8.0 is based on Debian bookworm, which initially causes a python compatibility issue with Glances. I suggest using the HACS Proxmox integration, as unlike the official Proxmox integration, it will allow you to control various aspects of the Proxmox host such as restarting VM, rebooting, etc. The Proxmox integrations don’t display all the CPU temperature sensors and a number of other sensors, but it does show VMs, LXC containers, etc. This is complimentary to the Glances Integration. There are two Proxmox add-ons for Home Assistant. So that’s why we are installing Glances on the Promox server itself and just use the Glances Integration to pull in the data. If you install the Glances add-on inside the HAOS VM, it won’t have access to the physical hardware sensors. To do this we will install the Glances server on the Proxmox host, then use the Home Assistant integration to pull in that data so we can view it. ![]() If you are running Home Assistant OS (HAOS) as a VM on Promox, you may want to display the hardware sensor data (CPU load, CPU temp, disk utilization, etc.) of your Promox host inside Home Assistant. ![]() ![]() ![]() While I am not encouraging you to do the same but at the same time, if you know in your gut that you’re not in the right place (like I did), sometimes the only thing to do is quit.
